Why UMI?

What makes Fishin’ on a Mission with Jesus distinct and unique? UMI does!

UMI (Urban Ministries, Inc.) is the largest independent, African American-owned and operated Christian media company. For more than 40 years, UMI has provided instructional materials that are tailored to our community and thoroughly evaluated by its theological and educational experts. Directly applicable to everyday life, our Christian education courses, books, and other media depict and speak to people of color in cultural context.

Like all of UMI’s products, our Fishin’ on a Mission with Jesus! program is:

  • Biblically sound. Each lesson features detailed Bible background with interpretations, explorations, and historical context to help students grow in their knowledge of God’s Word.
  • Christ-centered. UMI is committed to presenting the Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. (Read UMI’s statement of faith here.)
  • Educational. All our lesson plans are written by scholars and evaluated by education experts so teachers can easily follow sound teaching methods.
  • Meaningful and Timely. UMI materials are created with the spiritual needs and life challenges of African Americans and people of color in mind. We design each course for a specific age level from preschool to adult.
  • Culturally Contextualized. Ethnically inclusive illustrations and images help students connect and see themselves in the lessons.
  • Historical. Since its founding in 1970, UMI has fulfilled Dr. Melvin Banks’ vision of bringing the knowledge of God’s Word to African Americans and all people of color. (Read more about UMI’s history and vision here.)
When you use UMI materials, you can be sure that they were prepared with sound knowledge of God’s Word that translates directly to your life.
